If you are considering cancelling life insurance, do not treat the sum insured or the premiums paid so far as money available to withdraw. A death benefit is protection payable when the policy’s conditions are satisfied, not necessarily an account balance. Before giving a cancellation instruction, identify the exact product and ask separately about any cash value, premium refund and protection that would end.
This is general information for Australian readers, not personal financial advice. Your policy, Product Disclosure Statement (PDS), schedule and accepted amendments determine the cover and cancellation terms. This article does not recommend cancelling, retaining or replacing a particular policy.
Start with the product, not the amount on the statement
A large benefit amount can look like an asset that can be cashed out. However, an amount described as life cover is not the same as money accumulated for you. TAL’s current life-insurance overview explicitly describes its life insurance as not being a savings product, says it does not accumulate a cash value, and says no refunds are provided when the plan ends. That is a first-party description of its product, not a finding about every Australian insurance contract.
Record the product name, policy number, insurer, owner and whether it is held through superannuation. If an older contract uses different terminology, ask its issuer for the actual contract provision instead of applying a modern product description to it. A super account balance and insurance attached to that account also need to be identified separately.
Ask three different money questions
Use distinct questions so that a reply about one issue does not get mistaken for an answer to another:
- Cash or surrender value: does this exact contract create any amount payable simply because the policy is cancelled? Ask for the clause and calculation if the answer is yes.
- Premium refund: does any refund apply under the cancellation terms to the actual payment period and cancellation date? Ask for the basis rather than assuming all unused time or historic premiums will be refunded.
- Insured benefit: what cover remains before cancellation takes effect, and what conditions govern an insured event occurring in that period?
An answer that there is no cash value does not, by itself, calculate a cancellation-related premium adjustment. Equally, a possible premium adjustment would not turn the death benefit into a withdrawal balance. Do not add up past debits and label that total the amount owed back.
Use a cancellation enquiry before an instruction
Consider this hypothetical situation: a policyholder sees a substantial life benefit on a statement and wants money for an unexpected household bill. They ask whether ending the policy releases that benefit. The useful first step is an information request, not an instruction to cancel. The insurer can explain whether that specific product has any cash value and supply the cancellation consequences.
A concise message is: ‘Please explain whether my policy has any cash or surrender value, and separately whether a cancellation on the proposed date creates a premium refund or amount owing. This is an enquiry only, not authority to cancel. Please identify the benefits that would end and provide the applicable policy clauses.’
Keep the response with the current schedule and payment history. A generic website answer is useful background, but it does not replace an answer matched to your policy.
Check what would disappear before deciding
List each benefit attached to the policy, rather than looking only at the headline life amount. Ask which benefits, nominations and premium arrangements would be affected by cancellation. If you are considering reducing protection instead, read our guide to reducing life cover and asking whether it could be restored later. A lower premium today does not establish an unrestricted right to restore protection later.
If replacement cover is being considered, obtain product-specific confirmation of acceptance, commencement, exclusions and any remaining requirements before relying on it. A quote, application or premium instruction is not interchangeable with confirmation that the required protection has commenced.
Final confirmation checklist
- Have I identified the actual contract rather than assumed it works like savings?
- Have cash value, premium adjustments and insured benefits been answered separately?
- Do I understand the benefits and effective date involved?
- If I decide to proceed, will I receive processed cancellation confirmation and a final payment reconciliation?
Does a cancellation email prove everything is finished? No. An acknowledgement can establish receipt of the request without establishing the processed effective date or final ledger. Reconcile the written outcome and any later debit or refund before treating the administration as complete.
