Check stacked life cover discounts: Identify eligible premium, Apply reductions in sequence, Check expiry and extra costs

Two Life Insurance Discounts Do Not Always Add Up: Check the Premium Base

Check how multiple life insurance discounts interact, which premium components qualify, and what happens when an introductory or membership discount ends.

Two advertised life insurance discounts do not necessarily combine into the sum of their percentages. Ask whether they apply sequentially, which parts of the premium qualify, and whether extra membership costs sit outside the discounted amount. That information matters more to a household budget than the largest number in a promotion.

One concrete Australian example is AIA: its life insurance FAQ says that where more than one discount applies, percentages are applied one at a time, with each later discount applied to the already-reduced premium. This is AIA’s explanation, not a universal rule for every insurer or policy.

Separate the discount calculation from the policy decision

Begin with the written quote for the actual benefits and sums insured you are considering. Record the premium before and after the stated discounts, payment frequency and proposed start date. Ask the provider to identify the specific product and conditions behind each reduction.

A discount does not tell you whether death, disability, trauma or income protection benefits suit your needs. Those benefits have different insured events and policy definitions. Comparing a discounted package with a different package can obscure a change in protection. First hold the benefits constant, then investigate the price difference.

A worked example of sequential discounts

Consider a fictional eligible annual premium of $1,000 with two hypothetical discounts of 10% and 5%. These figures illustrate the arithmetic only; they are not an AIA quotation, current offer or claim about eligibility.

  1. The first reduction is 10% of $1,000, leaving $900.
  2. The second is 5% of the remaining $900, leaving $855.
  3. The total saving is $145, or 14.5% of the original amount, rather than 15%.

The difference arises because the second percentage uses a smaller base. That calculation assumes both reductions apply to the entire same eligible premium. If one applies only to a particular benefit or excludes a charge, the provider needs to explain the component-level calculation instead.

Do not treat this simple example as a calculator for a real invoice with different eligibility rules. Ask for the insurer’s own breakdown so you can reconcile the final payable amount.

Find out what is outside the eligible base

Create a worksheet with a row for each insured benefit, policy fee, government charge and any separate program membership cost shown in the quote. Mark the discount eligibility only after the insurer confirms it. AIA’s page discusses both premiums including government charges and a separately priced wellbeing membership; that does not establish how each discount treats every charge on your particular contract.

Ask: ‘Which amounts receive each discount, in what sequence, and which amounts remain payable in full? Please show the total payable including any separately charged membership.’ If a program is optional, request comparable written scenarios with and without it, using the same cover and payment frequency.

Rewards are not automatically cash available to pay premiums. Avoid counting a benefit you may not use as a guaranteed offset. Keep the insurance premium, membership cost and potential non-cash rewards in separate lines.

Check what happens at the next anniversary

For each reduction, record its start date, expiry or review date and continuing eligibility conditions. Ask whether it is introductory, linked to a membership, dependent on an activity or status, or subject to a changing schedule. Do not assume a discount remains unchanged because it appears on the first quote.

Also separate the discount from changes in the underlying premium and insured benefit. A percentage reduction can continue while the amount payable rises. If the anniversary notice includes an increase in cover, our benefit-indexation checklist helps distinguish that cover decision from other price factors. Request an explanation rather than removing benefits merely to match an earlier bill.

Short questions before accepting a quote

Does a higher advertised discount mean a cheaper policy? Not necessarily. Compare final payable amounts for appropriately matched benefits, including charges and separate costs, rather than discount percentages alone.

Can I assume every insurer stacks discounts like AIA? No. The AIA product page and FAQ support the provider-specific explanation above. Obtain the actual terms for another insurer and confirm they apply to your product version.

What record should I retain? Keep the quote, applicable discount terms, component breakdown and written explanation of ongoing eligibility. A request for a comparison should state that it does not authorise cancellation or alteration of existing cover.

This is general information for Australian readers, not personal financial advice. Eligibility, premiums, discounts and claim benefits depend on the policy wording, PDS, underwriting and applicable terms. Consider appropriate licensed advice for decisions about your personal cover; a promotional saving does not guarantee suitability or claim payment.
