Record Your Super Insurance: Statement date, Benefit details, Fund confirmation

Does Your Super Statement Show Current Life Cover? Build a Dated Record

An old super statement is a snapshot, not current cover confirmation. Build a benefit-by-benefit record and resolve differences with your fund.

If you are relying on life insurance shown in an older superannuation statement, ask the fund to confirm what cover is currently in force. Record each benefit separately, with its amount, relevant conditions and the date of the confirmation. A historic statement is useful evidence of an earlier position, not a guarantee that the same insurance remains active today.

This is general information for Australian readers, not personal financial advice. Your fund rules, insurance terms, applicable Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) and personal circumstances determine eligibility and benefits. Seek qualified advice before changing cover or super arrangements. This article is about documenting the existing position, not recommending cancellation, consolidation or a particular insurance amount.

Start with the benefit, not the account balance

A super account balance and an insured benefit answer different questions. Do not read the investment balance as the amount of life insurance, or assume an account being open means every available insurance benefit is active. Locate the insurance section of the statement and note the period it describes.

TAL’s Insurance in Super overview describes life, total and permanent disablement (TPD), and income protection insurance as different benefits. It recommends checking with your super fund to understand the insurance you actually have. This first-party educational overview does not establish the terms of your particular fund or confirm that all three benefits apply to you.

The overview also refers to legislative changes using relative language. That is not a reason to treat its page as a current timetable for individual cover changes. Ask your fund which present rules and notices apply to your membership rather than inferring a deadline from a general webpage.

Create a benefit-by-benefit snapshot

Use a secure document with one row for each benefit you want the fund to check. Start with the information available, clearly marking gaps as unconfirmed rather than filling them with assumptions.

  • Fund and membership identifier, with the statement date and reporting period.
  • Benefit name: death cover, TPD or income protection, as actually described.
  • Displayed insured amount or monthly benefit, preserving its units.
  • Any cover status, commencement date or expiry information shown.
  • Premium amount and payment frequency, if disclosed.
  • The exact document or portal page supporting each entry.

For income protection, also ask where to find the applicable waiting period, benefit period, income definition and offsets. For death or TPD benefits, request the relevant definitions and any conditions affecting the displayed amount. These are questions to resolve under the actual contract, not a universal list of benefits every fund must provide.

Resolve disagreement between records

Suppose an annual statement lists a death benefit, but a later portal screen shows a different figure. This fictional example does not prove that the fund made an error. The records may describe different dates, amounts or statuses. Preserve both versions and ask the fund to explain the difference.

A practical enquiry is: Please confirm the insurance currently in force for this membership as at the date of your response. My statement and portal show different amounts. For each benefit, please identify the current amount, status, relevant effective date and documents that explain the difference.

Ask whether any application, alteration or cancellation is still pending. A submitted application for increased cover is not evidence that the requested increase was accepted or commenced. Likewise, an acknowledgement of your enquiry is not a completed current-cover confirmation. If further evidence is required, record exactly what remains outstanding.

Keep provider identity and payment entitlement separate

Note the administrator and insurer identified in the fund’s documents, and ask the fund which channel handles insurance questions. The familiar brand on a portal may not be the legal insurer. Our guide to matching a life insurer’s legal name to the APRA register covers that identification task. Registration itself does not confirm that your membership has an active benefit.

A current-cover letter also does not guarantee a future claim. The applicable insured event, exclusions, evidence requirements and any superannuation payment requirements still need to be considered. Ask for an explanation if you cannot distinguish an insurance assessment from the fund’s requirements for paying a benefit.

Store a clear finish-line record

Save the dated confirmation alongside the statement, relevant insurance guide and any outstanding questions. Use a plain status such as confirmed current, awaiting explanation or application pending. Do not label a requested amount as insured merely because it appears in correspondence.

Protect membership numbers, identity documents and financial information. Share access only with appropriate trusted people or advisers through secure methods. Reviewing the record after a material change helps identify questions, but it does not replace professional advice or the fund’s formal processes.

Brief FAQ

Does a premium deduction prove my preferred benefit amount? No. Ask the fund to reconcile the deduction with the benefits and terms actually in force.

Should I cancel other insurance after finding cover in super? This inventory does not establish equivalence or suitability. Compare terms and obtain advice before changing protection.

What is the useful result? A dated, benefit-specific record confirmed by the fund, with discrepancies explained and pending requests kept separate from accepted cover.
