A friend can help organise claim papers without automatically becoming authorised to discuss your insurance or accept an offer. Before involving them in insurer conversations, ask what identification and authority the insurer requires, define the tasks you want help with, and obtain confirmation of what has actually been recorded against the existing claim.
This is general information for Australian readers, not personal financial advice. Your policy, applicable PDS, claim circumstances and the insurer’s privacy and authority requirements determine the relevant process. This checklist does not create a legal appointment or establish insurance entitlement.
Separate practical assistance from decision-making
Start by listing the help you need. Sorting photographs, keeping a document register and drafting questions are different from receiving private claim information. Receiving information is also different from instructing repairs, changing payment details or accepting settlement terms.
Do not assume that being a spouse, friend or emergency contact establishes every permission. Equally, being present on one call does not prove an ongoing authority has been accepted. Ask the insurer to explain the process for your product and situation instead of sending a broadly worded permission you do not understand.
Suncorp’s extra-support page encourages customers or their representatives to identify support needs and refers to duly authorised representatives. It describes recording information to arrange support. This is a provider-specific support explanation, not a universal form or a promise that every requested permission will be granted. Its stated general-insurance scope should not be extended automatically to every product carrying the brand.
Prepare a limited authority request
Use the existing policy and claim references, your name and a safe contact method. Identify the proposed helper and the exact tasks you want them to perform. Ask how to supply any required identification securely; do not attach identity documents to a public comment or share your account password.
- May the helper ask for progress updates and receive copies of correspondence?
- May they submit documents you have reviewed, and how should originals be preserved?
- May they discuss an assessor’s findings without agreeing to a settlement?
- Are payment changes, repair instructions and settlement acceptance excluded from the requested role?
- How long should the arrangement apply, and how can it be changed or withdrawn?
These are questions to resolve with the insurer, not a statement that all insurers offer those exact permission settings. If legal capacity, a power of attorney, a paid representative or an estate is involved, ask which separate evidence and process apply. Obtain appropriate independent advice where necessary.
Check that the insurer processed the arrangement
Keep three stages distinct: sending the request, receiving an acknowledgement, and having an accepted arrangement recorded. Ask the insurer to confirm the claim reference, helper identity, permitted tasks, restrictions and any outstanding verification. An upload receipt only establishes that something was received through that channel.
Before the helper’s next call, ask how they should identify themselves and whether the customer must join. Also clarify who receives deadlines and formal notices. Do not assume that messages will be copied to both people or that appointing a helper extends an existing response date.
A useful request is: ‘Please confirm whether the proposed authority is now active for this claim, what information my helper can receive, and which decisions still require my direct instruction. Please identify any missing documents and outstanding deadlines.’
Keep a factual handover and preserve your evidence
Prepare a short chronology, document list and unanswered questions. Mark uncertain details as uncertain rather than asking the helper to fill gaps from memory. Keep original files and dated notes, including what was submitted and through which channel. For assessment evidence, this claim-report request checklist can help organise questions without confusing document access with acceptance of the claim.
For example, a friend may be asked to obtain an update and list outstanding reports. If a settlement offer arises, they can record the offer and request written details without assuming they have permission to accept it. Ask the insurer to clarify any disputed instruction promptly, preserving the original conversation record.
Review privacy before circulating medical, financial or household information. Suncorp’s privacy page directs customers to product-specific statements; use the statement relevant to the actual product rather than assuming one branded privacy summary covers every insurer relationship.
Review or end the helper’s role
When the task ends, contact the insurer through a verified channel to request any change or withdrawal. Ask for confirmation of the processed arrangement and the contact details now in use. Keep the confirmation with your claim records.
Is a support person the same as an interpreter? No. Interpretation assists communication; authority to receive information or make decisions is a separate question. A support arrangement, representative appointment or booked call does not establish claim approval, repair authority or payment entitlement.
